A FWSA Family Makes the News!

A long-time FWSA memeber, Travis Bjork, ran the New York City Marathon in November and finished in the top 5% of over 50,000 runners! The Federal Way HS graduate played soccer from 5 to18 years old while his mom, Sandy, coached and sat on the Board as Scheduler. We couldn't be more proud!

Loss of a Local Legend

We are saddened to report that Karl Grosch, a WA soccer pioneer, has passed away. As a co-founder of the Federal Way Youth Soccer Association in 1967, he left a legacy of fun, camaraderie, and friendly competition in our community. He loved the game of soccer and loved the kids and volunteers who shared his passion.

Karl Grosch was also a licensed referee and co-founded the Washington Youth Soccer Referee Association. He went on to be President of Washington Youth Soccer from 1970-77 and helped lead the way for girls' soccer in WA in 1972 and eventually in US Youth Soccer in 1974 where he was a founding father. He helped draft the initial US Youth Soccer constitution, bylaws and rules and regulations and, that same year, was appointed as the first US Youth Soccer Region IV commissioner.

Its' easy to see how he ended up a member of the Halls of Fame of both Washington Youth Soccer and US Youth Soccer and why, in 2003, Karl Grosch Field was built in Federal Way to honor his contributions to the community. It has been the scene of FWFC soccer played by all ages and we will be forever grateful!

You can read more at WA Youth Soccer. Other honors are documented here and here.

He's Got Skills!

Congratulations to Erik Kinzner for making it to Phase 3 of the Sounders FC Discovery program. The staff made glowing remarks in his evaluation, including,

"You have an excellent technical ability to play firm passes to the fullbacks/wingers - this is a key characteristic of central defenders - keep it up!"

Happy Thanksgiving

Fawzi Belal Appointed as Director of Coaching

Federal Way Football Club (FWFC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Fawzi (pronounced Fooz-ey) Belal as its Director of Coaching. As the Director of Coaching, Fawzi will lead FWFC's next phase of growth and development initiatives. The core of these initiatives center around improvements in both technical and tactical development of players and coaching staff.

A local soccer product and graduate of Mt. Rainier High School, Fawzi played collegiately for the Highline College where he was Northwest Athletic Conference's 2001 player of the year. Upon graduating from Highline College Fawzi transferred to the University of Mobile and led his team to a 2002 men's NAIA National championship before joining the Sounders USL team.

Fawzi has spent 15 years coaching at premier youth soccer Clubs, Seattle Sounders Academy and the Sounders U23 team. His soccer coaching skills were sharpened during his years working on the Seattle Sounders coaching staff. The Sounders experience helped him develop his philosophy of creating the correct environment to develop an intellectual understanding of the game through improvements in technical and tactical training. He is currently coaching the FWFC boys U10, U14 and U16 teams.

Fawzi is an "A" licensed coach with USSF and holds a bachelor's degree in Sports and Health with an emphasis in coaching from American Public University.
