PRESIDENT’S REPORT – Stephanie Knapp

·        Met with Perry Woodford, President FWSA, and Jesse Hamishima, President FWU to discuss strategies on how to build a stronger and more united Federal Way soccer program.

o       Perry and Jesse suggested not allowing coaches to carry teams every year, and placing players in a “pool” similar to what they do in baseball.  This would allow teams to be more equal each year instead of having teams dominate every year.  This was discussed and the board felt that is was not in the best interest of the players and coaches in mod soccer.

o       They discussed player retention and recruitment.  The numbers are going down, so how are we going to get and keep players.  One idea was to have people representing Federal Way Soccer outside of grocery stores to do sign ups. (Fife Milton does this and is successful)

o       Discussed and signed a contract with Jesse, Perry, Rob Walker (Director of Coaching), and Stephanie agreeing to give Rob Walker $5,000.  Rob will run a camp in the summer for mod soccer coaches.  Stephanie will meet with Rob to discuss other things that Rob is able to do to support mod soccer.

VICE-PRESIDENT’S REPORT – Mary Ward

I attended the January 3rd FWSA meeting.  Here is the news:

  • The presidents of FWU, FWSA and FWMSC are going to meet to discuss the direction of soccer for our clubs.
  • Coaches applications are now complete and should be posted on the web for those interested in coaching teams at United next year.
  • Spring League registration will be opened by Jammie Hair on the 15th of February, 2007.  Please let me know if we want it sooner and I can contact her to open it sooner.
  • Looking at having Rob Walker put on a soccer day camp a couple of weeks this summer.  Will try for one week in July, likely the week of July 16th, and one week in August, likely the week of August 20th.  Sessions to be held at Lake Geneva and/or Celebration Park.
  • Looking at moving FWU coaches meeting to Sunday, and maybe association meetings to Sunday.  Weeknights are difficult for coaches to attend, and the change of day is hoped to improve attendance.
  • PDL news:  Seems that the top three items being pushed for by the PDL are 1) adding U14 to PDL, 2) Move girls league at U15 and above to Spring so it won’t conflict with high school,  3) change the travel paper process (big improvement to cut back on paperwork for registrars and a close 4) institute the club pass, where kids can move between teams within a club.

REFEREE COORDINATOR – Judy Simone Johnson

  • Discussed ordering more rule books as we only have 6 left.  Mike Franco, President FWSRA, wants to do another rules meeting for the coaches (modified referee clinic) to give coaches a better understanding of the rules.  Determined that we will order another 25 books to be available at the meeting.
  • Mike discussed the Labor Law Issue with paying referees under the age of 14.
    • We will continue to pay refs the way we have been for the spring league.
    • 80% of our referees are 12. 13, and 14 years old.  Anyone under the age of 14 can not be employed.
    • We need to change the wording to “volunteer” and the word payment to “stipend”. Referees ages 13 and below can be paid a stipend, thanking them for volunteering their time.  We need to determine how we would like to do this.
    • After spring, we can no longer allow under age referees to get on the web site to pick up games.  It will need to be done by email, phone calls, etc. on paper, not on the web site.
    • After spring, the stipend for the referees will fall on mod soccer’s lap and will not be done through the referees association anymore.

  • Referees Association would like us to continue to financially help support the mentoring program.  For the continued support, the referee association will continue to do coaches training, and possibly do a 1 day session for parents and kids who are interested in becoming a referee.
  • Discussed that at the mod level, the two factors are to keep things fair and keep kids safe.
  • Discussed that they do not have enough adults to referee U15-U18 games.
