OFFICER REPORTS:
President – Jesse
Hamashima:
The positive in the past year:
- A
stronger sense of mission and continuity within FWU. Meetings with parents, coaches
- Rob
Walker has become a stronger positive presence
- The
PDL has raised the bar in our competitive levels and brings strong
competition
- The
pool of coaches is more impressive
- Our
fields are great!
- Our
volunteer base is remarkable
The Challenges:
·
The costs of doing business is rising
·
Our recreational component is decreasing
·
We need to renew our volunteer base
Vice President– Perry
Woodford:
- This
has been an amazing year for FWUSC.
The PDL, that United is a member of, has really changed the face of
soccer in Washington. The GU15 and above move to a
winter/spring schedule of 10 games has kept many people busy. A great deal of time has been spent
supporting planning, transition, and club/association meetings. Several of our board members are meeting
to plan and develop this organization and their efforts are greatly
appreciated. What will change
next? United and Mod club has an
improved working relationship. Our first retreat was held in December. It
was a success and thank you to Doxon Toyota for a large donation to the
Blast Off to help us on our way. I
was able to spend more time working with and helping all our board members. It is great to have such wonderful,
passionate, and skillful people to work with.
In 2008 I will continue to work to
improve the relationship with Mod and programs to improve our coaching staff
knowledge, our referee retention, and player retention. The leagues and soccer in general is changing
at a rapid pace. It is harder to predict
the direction and to lead the soccer community.
Every effort will be made to bring common sense back to our game.
Secretary – Open
Position
Treasurer – Darlin’
Boudreau:
- Moved
to later in the meeting.
Director of
Competition – Jammie Hair:
- Helped
place teams in D2 brackets with the great help from our coordinators.
- Supported
many transition meetings over the year. This is where a few of us talk
about the needs of the club and try and brain storm about how to get to
where the club needs to be.
- Spent
many hours on the phone with Rob Walker talking about coach issues.
- Chaired
the uniform committee this time around. We had many sit down meetings with
different venders and companies.
- Organized
an E clinic for coaches. Attendance numbers were lower than expected but
please with the clinic.
- Attended
the Soccer Summit
with Rob Walker and Darlin’ Boudreau.
Boy’s Registrar –
Katherine Hinkle:
- Attended
Bonzi training
- We
have 35 teams registered in U11 – U18 with a total of 535 players. There
are 15 PDL and state league teams. We have 118 on the coaching staff.
Girl’s Registrar –
Acting, Katherine Hinkle:
- We
have 34 girls teams registered in U11 – U18 with a total of 513 players.
We have 14 PDL and state league teams. There are 83 on the coaching staff
(coaches and managers).
Storm Coordinator –
Robert Lewis:
- Has
been learning the ropes in this new position and will be ready for the
coming year.
- Assisted
with tryouts.
- Worked
on the uniform committee which is currently on-going.
- Would
like to assist coaches more in the future – what do they need and how can
the Club help them.
Reign Coordinator –
Debbie Frazier:
- Working
on determining specifics of this position. Found that helping Treasurers
and Managers was key as Rob Walker was assisting
the coaches.
- The
transition of girls U15 – U18 has been interesting.
- Had 2
teams in the Commissioner’s Cup, 4 teams in the Challenge Cup, and 3 teams
in the Championship Cup this year.
Boy’s Coordinator –
Kevin Wilburn:
Girl’s Coordinator –
Open Position:
2nd Vice
President of Administration – Darlin’ Boudreau:
Director of Coaching
– Rob Walker:
- Have
been working with Kevin Wilburn following tryouts to coordinate placing players
on non-select teams.
- Felt
the Retreat that was held in December was important. It’s clear about the
program that is desired. There are some small barriers but those can be
overcome.
- Lots
of change this year – girls U15 – U18 in the spring, U11/U12 will have a
16 month “year” for their season, etc.
- Action
item: what is the system for relegation of teams? Is relegation
appropriate? More information is needed on this issue – will communicate
with the State.
- Have
enjoyed working with the teams. Worked mainly with select teams but desire
to be out more often will all teams.
Fields Coordinator –
Sandy Bjork:
* Not present. No
report.
Tournament
Coordinator – Perry Woodford:
- The
2007 event was a big success. 2008
is full of questions. How will the
new schedule effect registration.
Especially at the girls U15 and above age groups. Saghalie turf
will provide more flexibility in game scheduling. The application is approved and we chose
to have all the fees the same at under 400
dollars. This seams to be the
threshold for tournament entry fees.
We turned away teams again and had our first request for an
application in December. The field
marshals have done a good job being the face of the club at all the fields
and your support is a big part of teams coming back.
Equipment Coordinator
– Eric Poortvliet:
- Was
only appointed one month ago. Looking forward to the coming year.
Field Development -
George Pfeiffer (in lieu of Field Coordinator Report):
- In
December paid stipend for use of Beamer field. It covers 300 games per
year.
- Celebration Park – was use more in late July,
August and September. It had to close early last fall. The City of Federal Way
wants to turn fields #7 and #8 into turf fields but Club is opposing the
idea. Blast Off works well with 4 grass fields.
- Saghalie field – obtained grants to assist with
funding of the turf field. Drainage issues and artifact issues slowed
construction. Still have drainage issues to resolve. The south end of the
field needs a net/fence behind the goal. Told the City that FWU would
assist ($12,000 approximately).
- Lakota
field – next action item. Probably will be similar to Wilson field with combination
soccer/baseball field. City and School District
partners on this field. Might contribute to it as use agreement.
- Lake Geneva - $25,000 plus $15,000 grant for work
done on field.
- FWHS
Stadium and TJ High School – School district is doing these fields. Short
$200,000 for TJ field – FWU not stepping in to contribute to this field.
Bids are out on the FWHS stadium turf – should be completed by September 1st.
Referee Report:
- FWU
and FW Referee Association have been working on better communication.
Working to promote adult referees in the Association.
- Rob
Walker has worked on timing of games on fields so that referee crews can
work back to back games.
- Pleased
with the collaboration between FW Referee Association and FWU! Want to
continue the communication and collaboration!
- Games
had 93% coverage in the fall season. Every game had at least one referee,
most had 2 referees. Last year, 2006, coverage was only 86%. Girls games for the spring are all covered at this
point.
Quorem obtained.
By-law Proposal:
Motion to approve bylaw (Article 15 – Team
Formation, 15.1 and 15. 2) as written. Seconded.
Question raised about non-select teams which resulted
in clarification about the colors for non-select teams.
Vote: For – 20, Opposed – 0, Abstain: 2. Motion passes.
See end of minutes for bylaw proposal.

Treasurer’s Report –
Darlin’ Boudreau:
- It has
been a challenging fiscal year. It has been hard financially for some
teams but they are working through it.
- Income
has been increased due to summer camps.
- The
2008 FWU budget will be discussed and voted upon at the April FWU Board
meeting.
Boys Coordinator
Report – Kevin Wilson:
- Still
working on placing players on non-select teams. Need names of those that
went to tryouts but were not placed on a select team.
- Of 15
coaches, 2 are not returning this fall. Only 80% responded to the email
about status of coaching in the fall.
Awards:
- Jammie
Hair indicated that the FWSA was going to acknowledge 3 coaches that had
worked with the same team since the Mod level all the way through U18 last
fall.
- Jesse
Hamashima thanked and acknowledge the Board and
volunteers for all of the time and effort that they have dedicated to the
players and teams over the past year.
Good of the Game:
- In
April/May there will be a meeting to discuss and decide whether U15 and up
District level teams will move to a spring season rather than the current
fall season.
- Chance
that CYL will not occur for U15 and below.
- MLS
team will be training at Starfire.
- Soccer
Palooza coming soon. FWSA has 3 candidates that
were selected for District III awards and will now be up for the State “Of
the Year” awards.
- It was
voted upon last week that there could be 5 transfers to a team for State
Cup play.
- YMCA
in Federal Way
is closing. George Pfeiffer is reviewing the sale of the building and land
to see if it is profitable for use by the FWSA.

Respectfully submitted,
Heather Hamashima
